Yoga and Menstruation

Yes it's that time of the month. There are many postures that are not recommended during ones menses but none are expressly forbidden. When on your period, the body's temperature is raised. There is usually some discomfort, pain and a general feeling of being unwell. The most recommended postures then to undertake during your monthly cycle are calming and cooling asanas which are gentle stretches and rests. Avoid practicing inversions and bending postures.

Here are a few postures you can try for this womanly time :
  • Butterfly
  • Supta Baddha Konasana (I especially love this one when I have the visitors - that's my favorite euphemism for being on my period)
  • Cat
  • Seated Stretches - Wide Leg and Head to Knee
  • Corpse Pose - basic relaxation, while practicing slow yogic breaths
This series I have found absolutely wonderful. It has helped me get through many visitations with little or no pain and discomfort.
